Steve Reinke: Rib Gets In the Way

April 12-May 11, 2018. Steve Reinke is the Canadian Artist Spotlight for the 2018 Images Festival. In his 30 years as a maker of moving images, he has never hesitated to show all and to tell all. From The Hundred Videos – all made before he was 30 – ight up to the present, Reinke speaks to the body, to death and to this certainty about the end that gives shape to our lives on the way. Rib Gets in the Way (Final Thoughts, Series Three) is Reinke at his most epic scale.

Curatorial Incubator v.11 continues as Yaël Filipovic presents Set tongues wagging [sɛt tuhng wag·ging], an examination of language itself and how by inserting themselves in front of the camera, artists may place themselves in the center of what she calls “these potent and delicate conversations” involving politics, nationalism, and colonialism.

We open this year’s Curatorial Incubator v.11 with Zach Pearl’s examination of that Hollywood stand-by, the Screen Test. Not surprisingly, he finds that artists have a way of baring it all that both embraces and surpasses the tradition. 

Nina Könnemann: Bann

Nina Könnemann’s Bann was filmed in London´s financial district where the spaces in which smoking is possible are increasingly restricted. The video presents a catalogue of inlets and corners where this activity is still practiced. Stains and residues, a hand or the tip of a shoe behind a wall indicate those niches. 

Lisa Reihana: in Pursuit of Venus

in Pursuit of Venus is a stunning live-action video by Maori artist Lisa Reihana. The video is inspired by the colonial nineteenth century panoramic wallpaper, Les sauvages de la mer Pacifique (1804-05), produced by Joseph Dufour.
